Migrant crisis: Migration to Europe explained in graphics

How many people are coming? Where do they come from? What is the plan for their resettlement? And will it work?
A number of questions that  have been raised by politicians, decision-makers or anybody living in Europe – or elsewhere. Check out the article of the BBC for a detailed explanation in graphics.
BEFORE YOU START, here are some terms and expressions that may help you understand the key messages of the text:

to spark a crisis = to cause a crisis

to struggle to cope with the influx = to have difficulties in dealing with the mass arrival of migrants

some may have passed through the border undetected = not noticed, not discovered

the surge of people arriving = the increase of the number of people arriving

the biggest driver of migration = cause of migration

The UK has opted out of any plans… = it chose not to participate in any plan

asylum seekers and their dependents = asylum seekers and their relatives

the voyage is hazardous = the journey is very dangerous

population density = the number of people living in an area
