USED TO DO SOMETHING
Do you know how to use USED TO? We use this expression to talk about something we did regularly in the past. So the key ideas that can help you remember it are the following:
USED TO refers to:
something you did REGULARLY IN THE PAST
something you DON’T DO ANY MORE in the present
EXAMPLES
I used to ride a bike to work.
Pete used to smoke, but he gave it up 2 years ago.
We used to work a lot in our garden when we had a house in the country.
HOW TO ASK A QUESTION WITH USED TO?
USED TO refers to the past so you can ask questions about it using “did”.
This is how to do it:
Did you use to ride your bike to work?
Did Pete use to smoke?
Did you use to work a lot in your garden?
HOW TO PUT USED TO IN THE NEGATIVE?
As with questions, you can use the auxiliary verb “did” to say USED TO in the negative.
I didn’t use to ride my bike to work. What makes you think so?
Pete didn’t use to smoke at all.
We didn’t use to work in our garden – our grandparents did.
