Accepting and refusing invitations – Now I Know

Accepting and refusing invitations can be tricky (= difficult). What do you say when you’re invited to a party? What do you say when you want to go and what should you say when you can’t or don’t want to? We’ll give you a few tips below!

Your friend says: ‘I’m having a party on Saturday. Can you swing by? (= Would you like to come?)

You mean:                                   You say:

YES! • I’d love to. Thanks! Should I bring anything?

• Sounds great! When does it start?

• That’d be great! Who else is coming?

• Sure, I’d like that! Thanks!

• Sure, thanks for the invite! I appreciate it!

NO. • Thanks – I’d love to go, but I can’t. I’m going to this weekend at my sister’s. Maybe we can get together next week?

• That sounds great, but I already have plans for this weekend. I’m sorry! Have fun!

• I appreciate the invite, but I won’t be able to make it. I’m sorry, I’m sure it’s going to be a great party!

• Thanks! I’d love to, but I can’t this Saturday. Can I take a rain check?

• Thanks, but I can’t go, I’m sorry! Rain check?
