Who is this course for?

The 200 hours language course (completed in 7 modules, as a single course or separately) is perfect for those, who deal with EU texts on a daily basis, wish to deepen their knowledge of how the EU works or, in general, have to use English in EU contexts (civil servants, diplomats, students in international relations, lawyers, economists, linguists, etc.). For more information on how to participate in the course, please visit the website of the Tempus Public Foundation.

What makes this course unique?

The course combines a content-based syllabus with systematic skills development.
Today, it is a well-known fact that the EU has developed its own language and terminology, which often makes communication in this context quite a difficult enterprise. Therefore, the course follows a double objective:

Firstly, it helps participants deepen their knowledge in EU-related issues by providing them with
– up-to-date information on the institutions, policy developments and “hot topics” at EU level,
– with special emphasis on presenting the multilingual functioning of the EU (translation activities, linguistic challenges).
– key terms in English EU terminology including French terms in Eurojargon,
– the most useful EU websites

Secondly, the course helps improve the ability of participants to communicate effectively in EU contexts by providing them with
– systematic skills development activities based on real-life situations
– the most frequently used expressions and collocations (word partnerships) in English as it is used in EU documents and at EU institutions based on authentic materials taken from a large collection of English language EU documents.
– key skills development including a Writing for the EU section introducing the most important genres of written communication in EU-related contexts and a Small Talk section giving participants the opportunity to practice and develop their networking skills and coping strategies in real-life communication.

Learning outcome

After completing the course participants will be able to
• understand the institutional structure and key policies of the EU
• discuss EU-related topics, avoid pitfalls while using English in EU contexts
• understand EU-related texts and documents
• produce texts that conform to the norms of written genres used at EU institutions
• recognise and properly use the most common terms and expressions in English EU terminology including French terms in Eurojargon
• identify and understand the most prevalent collocations and word partnerships in EU English
• find information on the most useful websites of the EU (e.g. Eur-Lex, IATE, EUROPA).

Methods and textbook of the course

The course aims to involve the participants by providing interactive communicative activities for both individual and group work.
Building on a content-based multi-skills syllabus, the activities planned for the course are designed to help participants learn the key EU terms and word partnerships, and familiarise them with the most important spoken and written genres that they may come across if they work in an EU context. The task types include

– discussing and debating EU issues,
– defining and finding the equivalents of specific EU terms,
– summarising complex information,
– finding EU-related information, just to name a few

The activities are taken from the course book on using English in EU contexts.
